What We Believe

New Horizon is in the process of reworking our Statement of Faith to more accurately reflect the values and beliefs of our current community.  The following is the current rendition of the Statement of Faith and has not been formally ratified.  It is a "work in progress" so please take it as such!

"Work in Progress" Version: April 14, 2008.

We believe that the Christian life involves both believing and practicing the teachings of Jesus Christ.  The follower of Jesus can never simply believe without also practicing.  We believe that faith without action is dead and that action without faith is powerless.  Because of this, our statement of faith includes both a Statement of Orthodoxy (right believing) and a Statement of Orthopraxy (right practice).

Statement of Orthodoxy (Right Believing)

 1. The Bible is truth, containing God's wisdom and instruction to help the follower of Jesus live a life of faith.

2. There is only one true God, who is transcendent, all-powerful and all-knowing.  God is the creator of the universe and is in the process of establishing a kingdom here on earth.

3. Jesus is God explaining Himself to us through the life and struggles of human existence.

4. The Holy Spirit is God living in us and through us now.

5. God has created each of us for a reason and even though we are all flawed, He desires a personal relationship with us.

6. We can have an eternal relationship with God because of sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who died physically so that we could live spiritually.

7. The Church is the crowning achievement of God's creation and is the primary instrument through which He is extending the influence and message of Jesus Christ.

8. God wants our lives to look like the life of Jesus Christ.

9. Jesus will return to earth.

10. Death is just the beginning to an eternal life.

Statement of Orthopraxy (Right Practice)

1. The follower of Jesus loves God and loves people.

2. The follower of Jesus practices self sacrifice.

3. The follower of Jesus practices genuine concern for the well-being of others.

4. The follower of Jesus takes up the cause of the oppressed.

5. The follower of Jesus helps others become more like Jesus.

6. The follower of Jesus practices authentic community with others.

7. The follower of Jesus forgives others because God has forgiven them.

8. The follower of Jesus lives a life that reflects the message and mission of Jesus Christ.

9. The follower of Jesus practices sacrificial generosity.

10. The follower of Jesus pursues wisdom and justice.
